Biosand Filter Donation in Cambodia

Mission in Cambodia

May 2007

In 2006, as a part of DMGF's continuing overseas capacity building efforts, an agreement was reached with the Trailblazer Foundation to hire DMGF trained staff to produce, distribute, implement and train other staff in the use of bio-sand water filters for the people of Cambodia .

The bio-sand filtration systems which are made of concrete, are easy to construct, install and maintain. Bio-sand filtration is a simple technology designed to filter water through a sand medium. The biolayer in the filter holds key bacteria essential to removing 99% of biological pathogens and 100% parasites. Water is poured through the filter processes at a rate of one liter per minute. The filter is made of cement at a total construction cost of approximately $45 per filter including the bio-sand media.

From January to May 2007, in association with the Trailblazer Foundation, DMGF helped provide 194 bio-sand water filters which supplied over 7,700 people with a sustainable source of potable drinking water.
