Flooding in Sudan

Mission in Sudan

August 2007

Described as the worst floods in living memory, the northern region of Sudan was pounded by heavy rains throughout the month of August. The number of fatalities has reached 122, while 200, 000 are left homeless and 500, 000 displaced. Damage to roads and infrastructure has left clean drinking water inaccessible to thousands and many fear that 3.5 million people are at risk of suffering from epidemics such as acute watery diarrhea, which is already responsible for 57 deaths.

In response, Global Medic supported the relief mission by shipping out the following aid items:

10 Trekker Water Purification Units
1.4 million Aquatabs
A consignment of essential medicines

The water purification units will be operated by personnel from Muslim Aid based in Sri Lanka . Members of the local community will be trained on the operation of the units which will remain in the country.
