Floods in Brazil

Mission in Brazil

November 2008

The four person team arrived in Brazil on December 2nd. Civil Defense Authorities arranged for the clearance of GlobalMedic’s humanitarian aid from the airport and delivered it to the air force base to join the team. The Brazilian Air Force provided transportation of the humanitarian aid and GlobalMedic team members to Navegantes Airport which is serving as the logistical hub of the relief efforts. The aid consists of 11 water purification units, which have the capacity to provide 70,000 people each day with clean drinking water; 2 million Aquatab Water Purification Tablets and 58,800 Oral Rehydration Sachets.

The team installed a Trekker Water Purification Unit at an emergency shelter in the village of Bau. Bau serves over 500 members of the surrounding community. Four more Trekkers are slated to be installed tomorrow in remote and isolated areas. Three hundred thousand Aquatabs and 10,800 ORS were distributed.

The local water board in Blumenau District, which includes some the communities affected the most by the flooding, does not have the capacity to meet the clean water needs of those affected. Therefore, GlobalMedic will set up the Nomad Water Purification Unit in Blumenau to provide mass distribution of clean drinking water to the region. Five Trekkers will be installed in surrounding isolated communities in addition to the distribution of 1.7 million Aquatab Water Purification Tablets and 46,000 Oral Rehydration Sachets.

GlobalMedic would like to thank Air Canada Cargo for their support.
