Mission in St Lucia

November 2010

On the evening of November 2nd, Hurricane Tomas made landfall on the small island of St. Lucia, Triggering landslides and killing 14 people. The island was lashed by Tomas with sustained winds at 75 mph, and the entire island has been affected. The Prime Minister Stephenson King declared a state of emergency and appealed for international assistance.

St. Lucia Damage

The southern town of Soufriere is the hardest hit and resembles a "war zone" according to Tourism Minister Allan Chastanet. The islands water treatment plant has been damaged and there is a definite need to provide clean drinking water to those who have been affected by the Hurricane.

GlobalMedic has deployed 3 members of its Rapid Response Team to St. Lucia with 6 water purification units capable of providing 6000 beneficiaries with clean drinking water, 1 million water purification tablets and 50,000 water purification sachets to provide 1.5 million litres of clean drinking water.

The water purification units have been installed in the following areas of the island:

  • Belair (SE of Castries) - 1 Trekker water purification unit

  • Fond Gens Libre (outside of Soufriere) - 1 Trekker water purification units

  • Odsan (SE Castries) - 1 Trekker water purification unit

  • Forestiere - 1 Trekker water purification unit

  • Marc - 1 Trekker water purification unit

  • Cannaries - 1 Trekker water purification unit


Additionally, the 1 million water purification tablets and 50,000 sachets of PUR have been distributed to affected communities by the GlobalMedic as well as through the Ministry of Health.
