Medical Workers in Mexico

Mission in Mexico

December 2008

Foundation director, Rahul Singh spent 3 months working near Zihuatenejo / Ixtapa, Mexico coordinating the prehospital emergency medical care program for a small Mexican hospital. The idea was simple: foreign tourists with medical insurance were charged for medical care so that locals who could not afford medical service could receive care for free. The tourists who required emergency medical care were ecstatic to have a Canadian paramedic provide the service and members of the local population were happy to receive a higher standard of medical care. Local paramedics were trained in accordance with Canadian and American standards and a new reporting system was developed to improve the level of patient care. DMGF is still working on procuring modern equipment to help supply their Mexican counterparts. Eventually new ambulances will be required to replace their aging fleet and modern equipment would improve the overall level of care available.
