Save the Children in Sudan

Mission in Sudan

May 2008

The civil war in Southern Sydan lasted 21 years, utterly devastating the region. Rumbek is the unlikely choice for the administrative capital of the south . The city of just under 100,000 is being rebuilt form scratch. While there is a mild sense of optimism, there are still no paved roads or multi-storied buildings .

Juba , also in Southern Sudan, has been a hotbed of violence since the 1950's. The first Sudanese Civil War was sparked in Juba ; a war which did not end until 1972. During the Second Sudanese Civil War, Juba was a strategic location for the fighting. The city now serves as the permanent regional capital.
