GlobalMedic’s 3 member Rapid Response Team has successfully trained local Filipino partner REGORON on all emergency operations and equipments deployed to the Philippines. They have moved operations into the Northern region of Luzon in response to severe flooding and landslides as a result of Typhoon Parma and the impending Typhoon Lupit. Operations will continue for at least another month, or until the need for clean drinking water subsides.

GlobalMedic has deployed its Rapid Response Team (RRT) to the Philippines in response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Ketsana. In 2006, GlobalMedic's RRT, consisting of paramedics and police officers from the GTA, provided tens of thousands of people with clean drinking water following Typhoon Durian in the Philippines. In order to build disaster response capacity in the region, GlobalMedic trained a group of rescuers from Regoron Project Support Services and the Philippine Mine Safety Environment Agency (PMSEA).
Currently, RRT members have set up a large scale water purification plant in the Municipality of Cainta in Rizal Province and are working alongside a Regoron Emergency Response Team. Local officials indicate that region has a population of 380,442 people of which approximately 280,000 were displaced. GlobalMedic teams are providing clean drinking water to people seeking aid in the areas 14 evacuation centres. Tanker trucks are dispatched to provide clean water to low lying affected areas where water is still waist deep including Baranguey San Andres where 2000 people are seeking shelter.
GlobalMedic has shipped 1.4 million water purification tablets, 92,500 sachets of PUR water purifier, and 55,400 sachets of oral rehydration salts to the region. The team is expanding its efforts by installing portable water purification units in shelters that are isolated. Thousands of people are now receiving clean water daily as a result of the team’s efforts.

GlobalMedic joined a group of Filipino Community Leaders at the Markham Filipino Community Centre for a candle vigil to raise funds for the victims of this disaster.

In order to build disaster response capacity in the region, GlobalMedic trained a group of rescuers from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Philippines (MGB). The MGB rescue units and water teams trained by GlobalMedic are now deploying to the current crisis.
The GlobalMedic team deployed to the Philippines will consist of volunteers from Toronto and will deploy to the disaster zone to support the local teams. GlobalMedic will be sending additional relief equipment in the coming days.
