A 15 member Global Medic Rapid Response Team arrived in Yogyakarta. The teams 2 doctors and 5 paramedics began setting up mobile clinics as well as setting up an inflatable field clinic. The other team members have set up a Nomad water purification system in Mbebeng village and are trucking water out to evacuee camps. As Mount Merapi erupts again, bringing the death toll up to 30 and over 40,000 people displaced, RRT members help with evacuating thousands to safety. The team has also set up and is providing clean drinking water in Dangean and Srumbung villages in the Yogyakarta area.
The situation in Mentawais in the western Sumatra area is also getting worse, following a second earthquake the death toll rises to 413, still 298 missing and up to 13,000 people displaced. As the weather is restricting air and sea travel some of the RRT members are pushing to make their way into Sikakap Camp the largest evacuee camp in Mentawai, West Sumatra, where the team plans to set up another inflatable field clinic and several water purification sites.
October 26, 2010
On Tuesday October 26th at approximately 6 pm in Yogyakarta Indonesia, Mount Merapi erupted 3 times claiming the lives of 17 people including a 3 year old and forcing 19,000 people to flee their homes. The eruption has send out massive clouds of gas and ash down the foot of the volcano.
At the same time a 7.5 magnitude earthquake has triggered a tsunami off the coast of Sumatra which so far is responsible for the death of over 100 people with another 502 missing. The devastated area is in desperate need of water, food, medical care and shelter.
In response to this, Global Medic’s Indonesian office is deploying a 20 foot and 25 foot inflatable field clinic as well as 1 Nomad and 5 Trekker water purification units capable of providing 50,000 people with clean drinking water per day.
