On September 27th, 2020, clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan erupted over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Intense fighting and heavy artillery are forcing civilians to flee the area or seek shelter in their basements. Over 350 people have been killed and 75,000 people are reported as being displaced, 90% of whom are women and children. This is considered the worst fighting between the regions in 4 years.
This is the latest clash in a decades-long conflict between the two nations over the Nagorno-Karabakh. A ceasefire signed in 1994 provided for two decades of relative stability. Prior to the current crisis, a four-day escalation in 2016 was the deadliest ceasefire violation.
