CYCLONE IDAI RESPONSE 2019

MOZAMBIQUE  •  ZIMBABWE

Tropical Cyclone Idai made landfall during the night of March 14 near Beira City, Sofala Province, in Central Mozambique. The cyclone brought torrential rains and winds to Sofala, Zambezia, Manica, and Inhambane provinces, resulting in 477 deaths, more than 1,500 injured, 128,000 people displaced and 600,000 people affected. In Malawi, an additional 922,900 people were affected by the cyclone, 59 people were killed and 672 were injured. In Zimbabwe, 172 people were killed, 186 injured and 327 missing. Flood waters contaminated drinking water sources and made key roads impassible, slowing the delivery of aid. GlobalMedic responded.

Members of GlobalMedic’s Rapid Response Team mobilized quickly and two teams from Toronto were deployed. The first team touched down in Mozambique on March 23, 2019 and worked to produce safe, clean drinking water and distribute Family Emergency Kits in order to prevent the spread of water-borne disease. A team also landed in Zimbabwe on March 24, 2019 and was able to provide clean water for several hospitals and remote clinics in Mutare and Chimanimani.
