INTRO TO DISASTERREADY.ORG 

In keeping with our commitment to continually improve as an organization, we are introducing an online course for our volunteers through DisasterReady.org.

DisasterReady.org is an initiative of the Cornerstone OnDemand Foundation and is aimed at increasing the efficiency and preparedness of relief NGOs. A collaborative non-­profit effort, it’s advisory committee is comprised of several international aid agencies, including UNHCR, IFRC, and World Vision. This web portal offers a multitude of free online courses related to humanitarian aid, along with 24/7 online support.

Courses may be taken at your own pace, and certificates can be downloaded upon their completion. Access to DisasterReady.org is available completely free of charge.

 SITE REGISTRATION 

In order to gain access to your required training courses, you must first register online. To do so, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to www.disasterready.org
  2. Click on “Sign Up Today” button
  3. Fill in the profile.
    • For “Organization Type” choose International NGO
    • For “Organization” choose GlobalMedic
    • For “Organization (Division) choose “_Other”
    • Leave “Role/Functional Area” blank
    • click “Login” at the bottom of the screen
  4. You will be redirected to the Welcome homepage and receive an email with login instructions for future use.

 COURSE REGISTRATION & COMPLETION 

Now that you have created your own account, you are ready to sign up for courses. Please complete the following steps:

  1. Ensure you are logged in.
  2. On the Welcome homepage: Look for the section at upper left called “Browse by Topic”
  3. Select “Learning Pathways” near the bottom of the list
  4. From the new page that pops up choose “Humanitarian Essentials Learning Pathway” from the list
  5. From the new page that pops up choose the “ Request” button at top left.

Once you have clicked “Request” a new screen will open. Choose the “Open Curriculum” button at right to get started on the course.

The HELP is divided into 3 sections: Principles & Standards,  Security & Staff Care, and Disaster Response.
There is also a 4th category that contains reading resources.

 

  1. Click ‘Open Curriculum’ for Humanitarian Essentials Learning Pathway if you have not done so already.
  2. At left you will see a list of the 4 Sections. Clicking on those will expose the modules that make up of each section in the box at right:
  1. You will see the complete list of 7 modules for Principles & Standards. Click ‘Launch’ to begin the first module: ‘Humanitarianism, Part 1 –Applying Key Principles’.
  2. The module will open in a new window. Make sure your pop-­up blocker is disabled or it will not work
  3. Use the arrow buttons at the top right corner of the window to navigate through the module.
  4. Upon completion of the module, continue to work your way through the remaining modules.Your progress will be bookmarked each time you leave the course.
  5. Once you have completed ‘Principles & Standards’, click on the second section, ‘Security & Staff Safety’ on the left side of the page.
  6. Complete each of the listed modules (4 modules)
  7. Repeat for the final section, ‘Disaster Response‘ (2 modules)

Please note:

In the Principles & Standards section, the “Sphere Handbook in Action” module is listed as 1 hour. This module is actually 6-7 hours, but is broken into a number of small sections, allowing you to complete it in 30-60 minutes sessions as needed.

 

Also in Principles & Standards, the module “Building a Better Response” will take you to a new website where you must also register a new account. Follow the instructions there to sign-up and complete this module.

 SAVING AND UPLOADING COURSE CERTIFICATES 

In order to ensure all volunteers have completed the required training, you need to email us your course certificate. To do so, complete the following steps:

1)  Once all modules for both sections of the ‘Humanitarian Essentials Learning Pathway’ have been completed, go to the ‘My Learning’ tab.

2)  At the top of your list of courses, click on the ‘Active’ dropdown menu and select ‘Completed’ from the list.

3) ‘Humanitarian Essentials Learning Pathway’ will be listed. Click the ‘View Completed’ button at right.

4)  Click the ‘View Certificate’ button at right.

5)  The certificate will open in a new window. Save this as a PDF file (right-click on the certificate and choose “save as” and save it to a location on your computer

This is what your completed certificate should look like.

6)  Email your certificate to [email protected].
