Since April 27, unprecedented flooding and extreme weather conditions have hit Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The accumulated rainfall over the past weeks is equivalent to the volume typically seen across an entire year. More than 460 municipalities have been impacted by the flooding. Over 2.2 million people are affected with 538,000 displaced, more than 150 deaths, and over 100 people remain missing. 140 hospitals have been affected posing a risk for public health access the region.
More than a million people are facing intermittent power and water supply. Intense flooding often causes damage to water sources and treatment facilities, putting people at risk for contracting waterborne illnesses. This can be incredibly dangerous and with so many health facilities and transportation networks disrupted at the same time, puts peoples lives in danger. Restoring access to clean drinking water is a priority to maintain health and safety in these vulnerable communities.

GlobalMedic’s Rapid Response Team is mobilizing to support those affected by the floods. We are preparing to send in AquaResponse systems which can purify thousands of litres of water. These systems will be set up at central locations including community kitchens and health clinics to ensure that all water being consumed at these sites is clean and safe to drink. We are also preparing shipments of our Family Emergency Kits. These kits contain a water purification solution as well as hygiene items and a solar light. FEKs provide solutions to multiple problems that families are facing.
